players can ask for price, term, no trade ect it's the gm who okays it
Like if I'm toews/kane of course I ask for 10 mill a year for 8 years with full no trade but it's up to the GM to say no
Look at the insane contracts guys who are no better than 2nd line talent get. That's what's killing the league. McDavid getting big money yes, tavarez, ovi,kucherov...but then you look at some 3rd line center who puts up 30 points in 82 games who got 5 x 3 contract because the team lact center depth
MATT MOULSON GOT A FULL NO TRADE FOR FUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKZZZ SAKE
Is it because of the free agency hype of July 1st? Every team feels like they have to make signings or there fans will cry and the media will RIP them?

What exactly is broken? The salary cap is a function of the league's revenue. As revenue each year increases so does the cap. Each player's value is a function of the salary cap at the time they sign their contract. Obviously as long as the league's revenue continues to increase each year, new contracts are going to be more than the previous year.
Nothing is broken, that's how the system works. |

The new generation of talent is far more offensively talent. These guys spending hours with skills coaches throughout their childhood has resulted in some high end talent. Back in the day pretty much only Crosby could reach 100 points and we have many hitting that mark.
Goals per game in the league has also risen. If an agent uses goals and points from previous comparable contracts during negotiations then a team should be able to use the difference in goals/game from the years the contracts were signed to soften the cap hit.
Example made up numbers)
2015 Goals per game 5.0
30g 50a 80p
should be worth more than
2019 Goals per game 5.5
30g 50a 80p |

Ok so it’s the players fault for increasing salaries? If my boss comes to me and offers to pay me $100 bucks an hour I’d be stupid to turn it down, if the company goes under how is that my fault? If the league or whoever doesn’t want such high salaries, tell the dumba$$ general managers to stop handing them out. The gms broke the cap, not the players. |

It's not broken. It was artificially suppressed until Edmonton changed that. |

They’ve done it twice first with Eberle and hall then with Leon, but let’s blame all the other teams. |

How can you ask the question and not bring up the first two really ridiculous contracts? Kane and Toews started the trend. |

28 points in 19 games oddly fits with Leon's 14/15 WHL playoff stats. |

Toews and Kane were loyalty signing for getting all those cups. Right or wrong that is what it is! What is totally mind boggling is all these teams handing out ridiculous amounts of cash for production #'s alone. Toews will never earn his contract. Kane's is fine. If young enough an 8 year contract will be a steal IF(big if) the cap continues to rise. |

I'm enjoying a pop in the backyard so I may be out to lunch but I'd like to see the top 10 scorers and their salary as a percentage of the cap...i think that would be a fair judgement.
Though I will say the salaries have probably increased like the blog says. |

That's still an oversimplification. You would have to consider each contract individually with their respective signing year. There's other factors too, perhaps some players over performed for their value, did they get overpaid?, did they get underpaid?, are they on a bridge deal?, Entry level contract? and so on.
Just looking at the two seasons the blog includes should make it obvious. The later season has Mcdavid with the premium contract in the league, the other season has a very reasonably priced Giroux. Just those two contracts skew the comparison let alone if you were to analyze each contract seriously.
This blog is really nothing beyond a quick shower thought. It would be way more interesting, and serious, if the time was taken to actually dig into it for a real answer. |

Crosby's post-rookie contract was 17.30 % of the Cap Hit. (5 Years)
McDavid's post-rookie contract was 16.67 % of the Cap Hit. (8 Years)
Lundqvist signed a 7 year contract when he was 31 worth 13.22 % of the Cap Hit.
Carey Price signed an 8 year contract when he was 29 worth 14 % of the Cap Hit.
I don't think the cap is broken. |

I agree. You can't look at just the amount of the salary without looking at the % of the cap. However, you can look at a contract like Lucic's contract and say "Wow, that's bad." |

It will be interesting to see how the NHL adapts to this jump in contracts, the cap can only increase by so much per year and once again we are approaching another salary renegotiation between the NHL and the PA.
It'll be another season cancelling lockout. Not this upcoming negotiations, but the next one. |

Hey Izoo ... do more gooder math. Actually, Sean did the math for us, The jump in contract amounts for the non-superstar players, is leaving way less cap for the rest of the team. The problem with that, is that the over 30-ies will now no longer get paid. They will get less or have no job. Simple math. |

The outrage usually centres around Crosby’s $8.7M cap hit. Compared to that, all other contracts seem obnoxious as hell. Sid’s salary for year 1 (2013-2014) was $12M (but cap hit $8.7M). Still think McDavid’s $12.5 in 2018-2019, 5 years later, is out of whack ? The issue is the kooky deal Sid signed ... he’ll be at $3M per year for 3 years starting 2022-2023 (just 3 seasons from now) - YIKES. In 2022, how does Sid work for $3M when Jack Hughes is getting $15M ? |

That's those 12 year term contracts with no rules governing year-to-year money difference. Easy to keep the cap hit down when you have such freedom in structure. |

While I agree the Buffalo JE signing was premature in terms of the $$$ given. If it wasn't Buffalo who broke the cap pay grades someone else would have...Leon had a very good season and playoffs and the Oilers were thinking he hasn't yet reached his ceiling which I'm good with...but let's look at a more recent signing which leaves me scratching my head....did the leafs really think Nylander is worth 6.7 mil per year??? Don't get me wrong he's a very good player but lets not forget who he is playing with. Can he produce without a high end centre...I don't think so...much like Ederle...if these two don't have a very good centre helping him they don't have the ability to impact the game in any other way i.e. kill penalties, provide defense or have a physical presence. So for me I think both Toronto and Buffalo paid well above the going rate for these 2 players...I would have tried for bridge deals for both guys in the 4.5 to 5.3 range 2 or 3 years??? Then we would have a better idea of what their ceilings would be and have more time to see if they can grow their games in other areas. |
